Slashing Production, PT Timah Commits Suicidal Action

Jakarta – TAMBANG. PT Timah (Persero), Tbk has announced to its customer the plan to slash its production to elevate tin price in the market.

“The production is in good condition, and the pricing is relatively better. Last year it was accounted only for US$ 1.8. Now it has increased to US$2.4, and hopefully would continue to reach US$3.1. We are also cutting down on production,” Sukrisno, President Director of PT Timah (Persero), Tbk, announced today (2/15) in Jakarta.

In addition, PT Timah (Persero), Tbk has also strongly advocated for the authorities to sort out illegal mining problem. If the problem could be resolved, Indonesia as one of the world’s largest tin producer would be able to control tin price in the market.

Meanwhile, Bambang Herdiansyah, a national tin observer, reviewed that the strategy could make sense if illegal mining problem can be solved with join efforts from all stakeholders. However, the fact remains that PT Timah’s tin production has always been much lower than the cumulative production of private companies. It showed that illegal mining is still a big problem indeed.

Bambang Herdiansyah asserted that the strategy to cut down production would be suicidal for PT Timah, since the company directly sells its products to consumers without being affected by the world’s tin price. “If PT Timah slashed its production, then who would secure its tin reserve?”

Bambang Herdiansyah further told that cutting production does not mean reducing illegal mining activities, so it would be a slight chance for the tin price to upsurge. Even with a mining moratorium, the tin price plunged due to the weather factor not because of the policy.

If tin price soared without the law enforcement effort to deal with illegal mining, it would cause a major tin reserve robbery in Bangka-Belitung Island. Subsequently, the local people will have to suffer a great deal because illegal mining caused severe environmental damages. []
